miralomaisw-2011-rainbowpuzzle1
What's happening?
  • Installation of our ISW school project - the Rainbow Puzzle - has started on the wall outside the office.  Read students' amazing, articulate responses to "When I'm included I feel..."
  • Read about famous people with disabilities who have made a difference in our world on the office window...inspiration guaranteed!
  • Help students participate in fun P.E. games 12/6-7 - there's still time to volunteer!
  • Celebrate the cultural diversity of our community's background at Friday's Family Feast!
For the full schedule of happenings please visit our ISW web page.

AXIS Dance at Miraloma!
axis2011"Prepare to leave all your preconceptions at the door...
AXIS Dance Company will change the way you think about dance and the possibilities of the human body forever. Founded in 1987, AXIS has become a jewel of contemporary dance and disability culture. They have paved the way for a powerful contemporary dance form called physically integrated dance. They’ve performed in over sixty cities nationwide, as well as in Europe and Siberia.
AXIS has been honored with many awards including seven Isadora Duncan Dance Awards and an additional eight nominations. They’re also known for their education/outreach program Dance Access and its youth component Dance Access/KIDS! that offers a kaleidoscope of events for adults and youth of all abilities.

On Dec 8 at 10:05am, AXIS dancers with and without disabilities will come to our school to perform innovative choreography that demonstrates how people with differences can work together. The assembly includes interactive participation by the students, plus candid discussion and Q&A with AXIS Dancers. Visit website to learn more about AXIS Dance Company.

Miraloma Family Feast

Bring a dish representing your family's cultural heritage to share

All families are encouraged to attend as we gather together to share foods representing our family traditions and cultural backgrounds. Come enjoy our awesome posse of families, eat amazing food, and culminate the school's celebration of Inclusive Schools Week!

School Spirit Day - Friday Dec 16
Grand finale of the stache fundraiser! Everyone is encouraged to wear mustaches to school!

Staff Holiday Gift Collection
staff-appr2011aThis year we will again be collecting money to thank the staff members who we don't normally get to thank. These folks interact with our kids every day just as the teachers do, and their support means a lot to our community. They are the librarian, the custodial staff, the lunchroom staff, the counselors, the adviser, the secretary, the coach etc. In all we have over 20 staff members to thank.

If you would like to make a donation, please use the safe and secure online donation option. You can also write a check to Miraloma PTA and label it 'Staff Holiday Gift' and put it in the locked PTA mailbox in the main office.

Thank you!
Meryl Bennan - PTA President

Ms. Kirman Named Symetra Hero in the Classroom
Ms. Kirman has been selected as a Symetra Hero in the Classroom. This program honors 16 teachers across the Bay Area during the San Francisco 49ers season, and honors them for making a difference in the classroom.

kirman1s kirman2s kirman3s
On December 1, representatives from the 49ers paid a visit to Miraloma to recognize Ms. Kirmans achievement and awarded her with a $1,000 donation to her classroom, a “Heroes” award certificate, 2 tickets to a 49ers regular season game, in-game video board recognition, and pre-Game VIP sideline experience. Ms. Kirman will also be featured on the Symetra Heroes in the Class Room Website.
Help with Inclusive Schools Week
Please help us make this a succesful and fun week by signing up online for one or more of the following tasks (you can also sign-up on the ISW bulletin board by the office, or by contacting Catherine Dauer):

Help Care for Our Chickens over the Break!
Please sign up for a day or weekend in December/January.
Weekend coverage begins Saturday AM and is finished with chores Sunday AM. The basics of chicken chores are letting the chickens out in the morning and putting them back into the house in the evening. Also, making sure that they have water, adequate food and a clean house/pen.

Chinese New Year Parade
Miraloma has once again been invited to participate in the Chinese New Year parade with the Chung Ngai Dance Troupe. The parade, celebrating the Year of the Dragon, will be held on Saturday, February 11, 2012 at 5:30pm. If your child(ren) would like to participate, please read the information sheet and turn in this application by Dec 30.
It might be early to think about an event in February, but I wanted to get the rehearsal dates out there for those who are interested in participating: Jan 8, 15, 29 and Feb 5 from 3-4pm.
Carol Lei (Danielle 5th and Miraloma alum Nikki 6th)

Miraloma Winter Food Drive
The Miraloma Community Service Committee is holding our annual Food Drive.
Please bring in some canned or boxed goods! There are large green barrels around the Miraloma hallways. They will be picked up on Wednesday, December 14th, by the SF Food Bank. [more info]

Or donate directly at our Team page  Miraloma Elementary School | Winter Food Drive and find updates and more information.
Toy Drive - until Dec 16
Please bring unwrapped toys for ages 0-12 (biggest need is for girls 8-12), e.g. sports equipment, balls, art & crafts, age-appropriate board games, action figures or dolls.
There is a bin near the main office.
Toys will benefit the San Francisco Fire Fighters' Toy Drive and the ECS's Canon Barcus House, which provides long-term, stable housing for homeless families.
Anything you can do will make a huge difference in the life of a child who otherwise will go without a toy this holiday season.

Thanks, and happy holidays!
Greg (Ryder - K2)
