Garden Mural Video
|
This year, the students of our school have created wonderful tiles of plants, birds, insects, and worms. They have made these wonderful, beautiful sculptures under the direction of our ceramics teacher, Aileen Barr. About a month ago, parents and kids gathered together with Ms. Barr and placed the tiles into their final arrangement, and a week ago, more parents grouted the mural with Aileen. The result is inspirational. Take a moment and visit the educational garden to see this new artwork in person. You can also watch it on video!

Early Release Day
|
In an effort to help reduce spending for next school year, we are piloting an Early Release Day on Thursday, May 20, 2010 (this week!).
We are hoping to instate this practice once per month for the next school year. Below are some answers to questions that have been asked thus far.
What is the purpose of the early release day?
Releasing students early on a monthly basis will allow for teachers and staff to collaborate on a regular basis to plan strategically. Research shows that planning time for teachers during the school day promotes student growth and achievement. In addition, we will save approximately $20,000 dollars in costs for substitutes to cover teachers to meet with their grade level for 1/2 a day per month.
What time will students be released on May 20th?
Students will be released at 11:20. Pick up will remain on the yard near the play structure.
What will happen with bus students and students who attend the YMCA, MEEP, or Latch Key?
We are encouraging parents to coordinate and organize play dates with their child's friends to lessen the need for parents to take off work. The YMCA and MEEP will be running their programs as usual, but beginning earlier, at 11:20. The Latch Key students can join the after school programing beginning at 11:20, or they can be picked up by parents.
What about lunch?
Lunch time will take place about an hour earlier than the regular schedule. Students will be participating in our "Families" program and will be eating together with their "Family". Hot lunch will still be available. If you are packing a lunch for your child, please consider packing a little extra for a later snack, as the time between lunch and dinner will be about an hour longer. If you are planning on taking your child out to lunch, or eating lunch after release, please try to send them with a snack so they can participate in eating with their "Family".
Teachers will be asking for information in regards to the after school plan for each child on May 20th. Please discuss these plans with your teacher and your child(ren) to help minimize any possible confusion.
Contact Mr. Machado if you have further questions or any specific concerns. Thank you for your support in helping to make this pilot as successful as possible! |

Final Student Council Spirit Day |
Calling All Student "Teachers"!
You'll have your chance to share great ideas with your classmates on Wednesday May 26th when the Student Council sponsors the last Spirit Day of the year.
Students are encouraged to submit a lesson idea to your classroom teacher so you can share something special with your classmates before the school year ends.
Past student teacher lessons have included:
-
Demonstrating how to make origami shapes
-
Teaching a math game
-
Leading a poem, song, or dance routine
Student Council members will begin making announcements about the last Spirit Day at tomorrow's morning circle.
Thank you for demonstrating your school spirit this year,
The Student Council |

End of the Year Giving for Staff Members |
We are rounding out the year and now is the time to start thinking about appreciating all the people who helped or children have such a great year at Miraloma.
This year we will again be collecting money to thank the staff members who we don't normally get to thank. These folks interact with our kids everyday just as the teachers do and their support means a lot to our community. They are the librarian, the custodial staff, the lunchroom staff, the counselors, the adviser, the secretary, the coach etc. In all there are over 20 staff members we will be thanking.
If you would like to make a donation, please put your money in an envelope and label it 'end of the year giving' and put it in the locked PTA mailbox in the main office. Or use your credit card or Paypal account online below (or on our website)
The money collected will be split evenly and distributed at the end of the year. |
