WHAT IS THE READ-A-THON?

The read-a-thon is an annual Miraloma event that combines promoting the love of reading in our children with fundraising to ensure our school can continue to offer all of the wonderful enrichment programs we have today.  Becoming a good reader is key to educational success and the read-a-thon is a fun way to get kids involved and excited about reading.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The read-a-thon takes place over 15 days. During this time students record all minutes read whether in the classroom or at home.  All reading counts!
Students also solicit pledges to support Miraloma. Pledges can be ‘per minute read’ or a flat donation.  While we encourage all students to collect pledges for their reading, it is not required in order to participate in the program; however 100% of the proceeds go directly to Miraloma!!  See the Read-a-thon FAQ for more information.

HOW DO WE RECOGNIZE OUR FABULOUS READERS?

We recognize our fabulous readers in many ways!
  • We recognize ALL participants with a small gift at the end of the Read-a-thon. Classrooms with 90% participation or above are also recognized with a popcorn party.
  • We recognize the top three classrooms with highest average minutes read/student. 1st place is $10 gift certificate for each student to the bookfair, 2nd and 3rd places are an ice-cream party.
  • Students who read 1,000 minute or more are in the Golden Dragon Club.
    • 1,000 – 1,249 – Bronze Dragons
    • 1,250 – 1,499 – Silver Dragons
    • 1,500+ Gold Dragons
  • For the Kinder classrooms we provide a welcome to the read-a-thon popcorn party!
